The county has 50 persons per square mile, a density which ranks 36th out of 72. The ethnic make-up is 97.6% white. The county seat, Balsam Lake, is populated by 950 persons (2000 Census). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 956 square miles, of that 917 square miles is land and 39 square miles or 4.08% water.
